Position Overview
A Metal Core Welder/General Labourer specializes in the Metal-Cored Arc Welding (MCAW) process, which uses a tubular wire filled with metal powders and alloys rather than flux. This role is essential for high-productivity manufacturing and heavy fabrication due to the wire's high deposition rates and efficient fusion.
Functions and Responsibilities
- Execute MCAW Welding: Perform high-speed welding using metal-cored wire, typically in flat and horizontal positions, though advanced pulse machines allow for out-of-position work.
- Setup & Equipment Management: Configure welding machines with specialized knurled drive rolls to prevent wire crushing and set shielding gas (typically 90% Argon / 10% CO2) at 30–35 CFH.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex technical drawings, weld symbols, and project specifications to plan fabrication.
- Joint Preparation & Fitting: Prepare metal surfaces by grinding or cleaning and align parts using clamps, rulers, and squares prior to welding.
- Quality Inspection: Examine finished welds for defects like porosity or lack of fusion, ensuring they meet industry standards (e.g., CWB or AWS).
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on torches, liners, and welding power sources.
- General Labourer: Cleaning and organizing shop areas, emptying garbage, supplying run for other shop employees.
- Other duties and tasks as required by supervisor
Job Requirements
- Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of MCAW variables, including wire feed speed (IPM) and voltage settings for spray transfer.
- Certifications: Often requires a valid CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) or AWS (American Welding Society) certification.
- Physical Requirements: High physical stamina for standing long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in environments with heat and fumes.
- Mathematical Skill: Ability to calculate dimensions, angles, and material quantities accurately.
- Safety Awareness: Strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of PPE (helmets, respirators, and fire-resistant gear)
- Ability to communicate and read in English, required.
- Ability to work productively independently and in a team environment.
- Flexible, self-motivated and driven to achieve customer satisfaction goals and targets.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to walk, bend, push, pull and lift repetitively during working hours.
